What is chromium?
Chromium occurs as the natural ore chromite and is one of the 20 most
abundant elements in the Earth's crust. Its name is derived from the Greek
word 'chroma' meaning colour.

Are chromium chemicals different from chromium metal?
Yes, chromium metal is a blue-ish white, shiny material. When chrome ore is processed, it can be turned into various different chemicals in liquid, powder or granular form.

What chromium chemicals does Elementis Chromium manufacture?
Elementis Chromium manufactures a range of commodity and speciality chromium products. These include chromic acid, chromic oxide, ammonium dichromate, potassium dichromate, sodium dichromate, chrome sulphate and sodium sulphate.

Where are chromium chemicals made?
Our three main manufacturing sites are at Eaglescliffe, UK, Corpus Christi and Castle Hayne, US. These facilities process chromium ore to produce a range of chromium chemicals.

We also have three Leather Tanning Products sites in the US at Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Amarillo, Texas and Dakota City, Nebraska. These three facilities process dichromate [manufactured by Castle Hayne] to produce liquid chrome sulphate for the American leather tanning industry.

What are chromium chemicals used for?
Our chromium chemicals can be found in a wide range of everyday items:

plumbing fixtures, car accessories and domestic appliances such as kettles and toasters are chrome plated
 
ingredient of products applied to protect timber used to build bridges, utility poles, marine piles and many other industrial applications.
 
super-alloys used in aircraft engines and land based turbines contain chromium metal made from chromic oxide. In addition chromic oxide is used in applications to colour ceramics, surface coatings, cosmetics, plastics and construction products
 
chrome sulphate tans leather used to make clothing and shoes
sodium sulphate is an ingredient in washing powders

Does Elementis Chromium have a chrome plating business?
No, we sell our chromic acid product to other companies who chrome plate items.

Who owns Elementis Chromium?
Elementis Chromium is a division of Elementis plc, the international specialty chemicals group

What is the Admiralty Ecology Site?
The Ecology Site has been created from part of the Elementis Chromium site at Eaglescliffe in the UK. Developed by a group of employees - with help from Tees Forest and other volunteer organisations - it has become an award-winning conservation area and valuable local amenity. It welcomes over 2,500 visitors each year.
