History
A progressive programme of investment and expansion has helped make Elementis Chromium a market leader.

  Recent developments
The acquisition of the chromium chemicals business of US based Occidental Chemical Corporation, OxyChem in 2002, the former OxyChem operation at Castle Hayne, North Carolina now becomes Elementis Chromium's primary US operation producing dichromate and chromic acid to serve the North American market.

In March 2006 operations at the Eaglescliffe site were streamlined in order to concentrate on production of Chromic Oxide. Manufacture of chromic acid and of chrome sulphate was suspended and one of the two sodium dichromate kilns was mothballed. These steps were taken in the interests of improving the stability and sustainability of earnings from the UK operations.

Launch of Elementis
Harrisons & Crosfield traded as a large, diversified conglomerate. In 1997, the company directors took the decision to concentrate the business around its performance chemicals expertise and in 1998 re-launched as Elementis plc. As part of this, British Chrome & Chemicals, American Chrome & Chemicals and Wayne Chemicals were re-branded as Elementis Chromium, although separate corporate entities remain. These businesses were subsequently integrated into the global operation which operates today.
